Brennerman on Leadership
I started to read this interview with Greg Brennerman in Sunday NYT — and broke out laughing.
Q. What do you consider the keys to effective leadership?
A. The most important thing is that you treat everybody incredibly well
Sounds nice —- The laeader as waiter? Actually, most of the leaders I have worked with are not that nice. On the other hand, they are effective in engaging people to do essential things. In other words, niceness can work (especially if it produces thankfulness) — but it is not a condition of great leadership.
Later on Brennerman gets to the more important points about simplicity, and has some good things to say. Errr ….. though I have to admit I skpped the part about his golfing handicap.
