IBM and Cool
It was a long, long time ago when people thought IBM was cool - that those guys were way ahead of the rest of us. That was when IBM was about the only firm around that knew how to build mainframes. Mainframes? Ye . one of these things

Then IBM became very un-cool when they tried to innovate beyond mainframes. They suffered from a sort of a corporate culture shock when they no longer dominated the market. They were wedded to out of date ideas, methods, and contacts.
But over the last several years they have been getting a patina of coolness back in their new service oriented incarnation. How do I know? I listened to their new tag line:
Hey! I’d like to do that! Cool! It’s a great tag. Let’s see how this “building smarter” develops as a leadership theme.
