Ouch! Non Profits Leading?

Seth Godin has an interesting post today about non-profits who are and who are not using social networking tools. I think he has a good point. He has the nerve to say

The problem facing (non-profits), ironically, is the resistance to the very thing (people working with non-profits set) out to do. Non-profits, in my experience, abhor change.

And then Seth asks this embarassing question

When was the last time you had an interaction with a non-profit (there’s that word again) that blew you away?

Ouch! Why is this an issue? I thought non-profits were supposed to be on the cutting edge of change? The truth is more prosaic. Non-profits (at least in this neck of the woods) are usually set up and run by people who lack strong managerial experience and skills. And they tend to be oriented to finding grants, working with the public sector, and relying on individual heroism rather than buildnig institutional relationships. Equally serious — there is a mistrust of business and business tools.

It is a major issue, methinks. Way to go Seth for calling us on it! You are right.
