It is July and in the summer heat, it is perhaps not the best time to nurture great ambitions. But it is a good time for reflection about ambition. And I found myself doing that yesterday while I cut the grass.
I was thinking about the life and times of Winston Churchill. I got interested in Churchill while I was in university. I was not attracted so much by the wartime Churchill. It was the young Churchill who claimed my attention. More precisely it was the curious nature of his ambition. It went beyond just yearning to have power. Churchill wanted also to be the master of the storyline. He wanted to dominate with his intellect. This ambition produced an incredible ascent and then disastrous fall from grace. More important for me as a youngster, it evidenced an amazing vitality. He was at the center of a fine adventure.
I started thinking yesterday who in our day has similar intellectual ambition. I couldn’t think of anyone.
