I realized that it is Friday when the dog started barking and the cleaning lady came in the kitchen door. Sigh! Once again I have been distracted. This time the villain was an alleged difference between cloud computing and utility computing. GigaOM warns that these present a “seismic shift in information technology”. With yet another seismic shift at hand, I reflected that it was not a good idea to remain mixed up on this difference. But as I read the post, it seems that as in a great ratatouille, the distinct items do blend together rather well. When we begin to call the internet our own space instead of something out there, we will find that using cloud computing and utility computing to be as simple as Leslie Ray’s recipe. To stake a claim to this shared space, I have posted to Leslie Ray’s lovely blog asking her to help out!
A follow up - NYT runs an interesting article about some companies that believe smaller companies will start moving their confidential data to cloud computing servers. Why? If the data remains secure, there could be a very big cost saving over time.
