Divorcing your Friends
I see a lot of chit chat in the media about how social networking adds value. So a lot of start ups are trying to add social dimensions to what they offer. The assumption means that more social equals more value. Wrong.
Value comes out of meaningful exchanges. It does not arise from noise. The internet has led to an explosion of noise and a lot more exchange opportunities. But it has not yet produced an explosion of meaning.
So, as Techmeme founder and CEO Gabe Rivers says to Giga, there are times when we want to divorce our friends and read what a skilled human thinks is important.
