Half Way Through My Trip … Something Happened
This was a line from Keith Jenkins’ TEDX presentation about travel blogging. Half way through … and then the story really got going.
The line got me thinking how often we have to get “half way through something” before we begin to realize that things are not what we thought. That something is different. This has happened to me lots of times, especially when I am managing strategic choices for firms. You start up with a strategy and it is only when you start implementing it do you see clearly what the story is really about. And this is why we go to the trouble to formulate a strategy. Our strategy gives us the metrics to test what is going on.
An example? How about the story of a start up company called “Honest Tea”. I love this comment from one of the founders. For a while we thought we were in the tea business. Then we realized we were in the honesty business.
So true.
