Leading in Education?

Tartu (my home) is a university town, and its university is very old (founded by the Swedish king in 1632). In its day, Tartu University (then called Dorpat) has had distinguished accomplishments. But today? Ouch! For our town to thrive, we have to regain a leadership role in Europe. So can we climb back into the “leadership” category?
There is that word again “leadership”. We are talking about it here more and more here in Tartu. And now I am getting into a debate about building leadership as a normative value into university programming.
This may sound esoteric. But think about it. Where do people learn to be leaders? At the grocery store? Come to think of it, where do they learn entrepreneurship? Community values? Advocacy?
Answer — these days, they do not. And that my friend is our leadership problem in a nutshell. Let’s see if we can do something about it.
